Breed Profile
Often confused with the Canadian Sphynx, the Donskoy (or Don Sphynx) is a completely different breed with a unique genetic twist. Hailing from Russia, this hairless beauty is known for its dog-like loyalty, wrinkled skin, and incredibly warm personality.
⚡ Quick Look
The Donskoy is social, smart, and affectionate. Unlike the Sphynx (whose hairlessness is recessive), the Donskoy’s hairlessness is a dominant gene. They are sturdy, muscular, and feel hot to the touch.
History & Origin: The Rescue Kitten
The breed’s story began in 1987 in Rostov-on-Don, Russia. A professor named Elena Kovaleva rescued a kitten being abused by boys. She named the kitten Varvara.
Varvara began to lose her hair as she grew. Kovaleva tried to treat it, thinking it was a disease, but the kitten was healthy. When Varvara had kittens, they also lost their hair. It was discovered to be a natural genetic mutation. The breed was originally called the Don Sphynx and was recognized by WCF in 1997 and TICA in 2005.
Personality: The Velcro Cat
Donskoys are incredibly people-oriented. They do not tolerate isolation well.
🤝 Friendly to All
They assume everyone is a friend. They greet guests at the door and get along famously with other pets, including dogs.
🧠 Highly Trainable
Their intelligence makes them easy to train. Many Donskoys learn to fetch, shake hands, and walk on a leash.
They are tactile cats—they love to touch your face with their paws and snuggle under blankets to share body heat.
Appearance: More Than Just Bald
The Donskoy is a medium-sized, muscular cat with heavy wrinkling. Uniquely, they can be born with different coat types:
- Rubber Bald: Born completely hairless and stays that way. The skin feels like warm rubber.
- Flock: Covered in a soft, chamois-like down that feels like a peach. May become bald with age.
- Velour: Born with a bald spot on the head and woolly hair elsewhere, which gradually disappears.
- Brush: Retains some wiry, wavy hair (usually not for show, but great for breeding).
They also have distinctive webbed toes and long, slender fingers.
Health & Care
Being hairless means they require specific maintenance.
Care Requirements:
- Skin Care: They sweat! Regular wiping or bathing is needed to remove oils. However, over-bathing can cause dry skin. They are also prone to acne.
- Temperature: They are strictly indoor cats. They need sweaters in winter and sun protection in summer (yes, they can get sunburned).
- Teeth: Like many hairless breeds, they can be prone to gum disease, so dental care is vital.
Is the Donskoy Right for You?
If you want a unique, affectionate, and interactive companion and don’t mind the skin care routine, the Donskoy will reward you with boundless love and loyalty.
