Think of the Colorpoint Shorthair as a Siamese in Technicolor. They share the same elegant body and demanding personality, but come in a palette of 16 stunning colors that the traditional Siamese does not accept.

⚡ Quick Look

This is a Velcro cat. They will follow you, talk to you, and demand to be on you. If you want a quiet, independent pet, this is not it. They are highly intelligent, extremely vocal, and deeply loving.

History & Origin: Breaking the Rules

The Colorpoint Shorthair exists because some breeders wanted the Siamese look but in more colors than the traditional four (Seal, Chocolate, Blue, Lilac). In the 1940s, breeders crossed Siamese cats with red tabby American Shorthairs (and later Abyssinians) to introduce the red gene.

This experiment was a success, creating cats with the Siamese body type but with red, cream, and tortoiseshell points. The CFA (Cat Fanciers’ Association) recognizes them as a separate breed, while many other registries just consider them a color variation of the Siamese.

Personality: The Talker

Like their Siamese cousins, Colorpoint Shorthairs are extroverts. They believe they are the center of the universe and will loudly protest if you disagree.

They have a distinctive, loud meow (often called a “yowl”) and will hold long conversations with you about their day, their food, and the weather.

❤️ Emotionally Sensitive

They are extremely sensitive to their owner’s moods. If you are sad, they will try to comfort you. If you are ignored, they can become depressed.

They are high-energy cats who love to play fetch and puzzle games. They get along well with other active cats and dogs.

Appearance: Elegant Rainbow

Physically, they are indistinguishable from the Siamese. They have the same tubular body, wedge-shaped head, and large ears.

Colors: This is where they shine. They come in 16 colors including Red Point, Cream Point, Lynx Points (tabby markings on the points), and Tortie Points.
Eyes: Always a vivid, deep blue.
Coat: Short, fine, and glossy. It lies close to the body and feels like satin.

Health & Care

Because they share their genetic pool with the Siamese, they share the same health concerns.

Care Requirements:

Dental Health: They are prone to periodontal disease. Daily teeth brushing is highly recommended.
Warmth: With their thin coats and low body fat, they get cold easily. They will seek out laps, heaters, and sunny spots.
Health Issues: Watch for amyloidosis (liver issue), asthma, and crossed eyes (though less common now).
