Khao Manee Cat

Khao Manee Cat

Breed Profile

Known as the “Diamond Eye” cat, the Khao Manee is a rare and ancient jewel from Thailand. With a pure white coat as smooth as silk and striking jewel-toned eyes that seem to peer into your soul, this breed has been kept a secret in its native land for centuries. Beyond their mesmerizing appearance, the Khao Manee is an energetic, social, and devoted companion who thrives on human interaction.

History and Royal Origins

The history of the Khao Manee (pronounced “Cow Man-ee”) is steeped in legend. The name literally translates to “White Gem.” References to this breed date back hundreds of years to the Tamra Maew, or Cat Book Poems, an ancient Thai manuscript. In these texts, they are described as the “Khao Plort,” meaning all white.

For centuries, the Khao Manee was bred exclusively by the royalty of Siam (now Thailand). It was believed that these cats attracted good luck and wealth to any household that possessed them. Because of their royal status, the breed was fiercely protected and rarely seen outside the palace walls. It wasn’t until 1999 that the first Khao Manee cats were imported to the United States by Colleen Freymuth, launching a breeding program to save this rare gem from obscurity.

Today, the Khao Manee is still considered a rare breed in the West, though it gained championship status in TICA (The International Cat Association) in 2015.

Physical Characteristics

The Khao Manee is an elegant, muscular cat of medium build. They are not as extreme in body type as the Siamese but share the Oriental grace. They have an athletic appearance, suggesting a cat that is ready for action.

The Coat

The hallmark of the breed is its snow-white coat. The fur is short, smooth, fine, and lies close to the body. It has very little undercoat, making it relatively low-maintenance. In the Thai tropical climate, this sleek coat serves them well. Note that kittens are sometimes born with a small dark spot on their head (a “genie mark”), which usually disappears by the time they are a year old, leaving them pristine white.

The Diamond Eyes

The eyes are the most captivating feature of the Khao Manee. They are medium-sized and almond-shaped. The acceptable colors are:

  • Blue: A brilliant, piercing blue.
  • Gold/Yellow/Green: Ranging from amber to bright green.
  • Odd-Eyed: The most prized variety, where one eye is blue and the other is gold or green. This heterochromia is a signature trait that adds to their mystical allure.

Personality and Temperament

The Khao Manee is not a cat that likes to be ignored. They are incredibly social, outgoing, and people-oriented. They bond deeply with their human families and want to be involved in every aspect of household life.

The “Velcro” Cat: You will find your Khao Manee following you from room to room. They are known to be lap cats when they are ready to relax, but they are also highly active. They act as the “greeters” of the home, often running to the door to welcome guests rather than hiding under the bed.

Playful and Intelligent: These cats retain a kitten-like playfulness throughout their lives. They are intelligent and can be taught to play fetch. They enjoy interactive toys and climbing. Their curiosity is boundless, so child-proof locks on cabinets might be necessary!

Vocal: Like their Thai cousins, the Siamese and Korat, the Khao Manee is vocal. They will chat with you, though their voice is generally described as pleasant and not as loud or demanding as a Siamese.

Care and Maintenance

Grooming

Grooming a Khao Manee is a breeze. Their short coat does not mat and sheds only moderately. A weekly brushing with a soft bristle brush or a grooming glove is usually enough to keep their coat gleaming and to minimize hair around the house.

Sun Protection

Because they have white fur and often pink skin on their ears and nose, Khao Manees are susceptible to sunburn. If they have access to a secure outdoor enclosure (catio) or enjoy sunbathing in windows, monitor their exposure during peak sun hours to prevent skin damage or skin cancer.

Health and Longevity

The Khao Manee is a natural breed and is generally robust and healthy. They have a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years or more.

Deafness Concerns

As with any white cat breed (especially those with blue eyes), there is a genetic link to deafness.

  • Odd-eyed cats: Deafness is sometimes found on the side of the blue eye.
  • Blue-eyed white cats: Have a higher statistical chance of deafness than those with gold eyes.

Reputable breeders test hearing (BAER test) in kittens before placing them in homes. However, deaf cats can live perfectly happy, normal lives indoors where they are safe from traffic and predators.

Is the Khao Manee Right for You?

If you are looking for a stunningly beautiful, rare cat that will be a devoted member of the family, the Khao Manee is an excellent choice. They are great with children and other pets due to their social nature. However, they do not like being left alone for long periods. If you work long hours, they will need a feline companion.

Owning a Khao Manee is like owning a piece of living history—a royal treasure that will bring joy, luck, and plenty of conversation into your home.

I read that a cat with the characteristics of a Khao Manee is considered to be so only if you have the papers for the parents. Is that so? I ask because I have a white blue eyed cat but I got it from a pet shop. When I got it I searched for its breed in the internet. I do not have any supporting papers, but it matches the characteristics.

So the question of the breed is a convention, right? But what happens to undocumented cats? You Just consider them outcasts? I would like an enlightening answer please. Thank you very much.

I adopted this cat that was trapped in a field along with his brother , I was looking up pictures of this breed and he definitely looks like a Khao Manee and fits the characteristics of this breed! I love him because he is so loving, smart and interactive. I named him Sugar baby! He has a heart shape impression on his chest due to his cowlicks! I am happy with my pick after 10 yrs of waiting for just the right one!
