Exotic Shorthair

Exotic Shorthair

Breed Profile

Imagine a Persian cat in pajamas. That’s the Exotic Shorthair. It has the same sweet face, the same round eyes, and the same gentle personality as the Persian, but with a short, plush coat that doesn’t require hours of grooming. It’s no wonder this breed is one of the most popular in the world.

⚡ Quick Look

The Exotic is the ultimate lap cat. They are calm, quiet, and undemanding. They are perfect for apartment living and for people who want the Persian look without the high-maintenance hair.

History & Origin: The Happy Accident

In the 1950s, American Shorthair breeders secretly crossed their cats with Persians to introduce the silver color and green eyes. The resulting kittens were stunning, but they didn’t look like American Shorthairs—they had the Persian’s heavy bone structure and cute face.

Instead of rejecting them, breeders recognized the potential. They decided to develop this new look as a separate breed. They called it the “Exotic Shorthair.” Today, the breed standards for the Persian and Exotic are identical, except for coat length.

Personality: Sweet and Silent

Exotics are known for being even more affectionate than Persians. They are incredibly easygoing.

🤫 Quiet Companions

They rarely meow. When they do, it’s a soft squeak. They prefer to communicate by staring at you with their big round eyes.

🧸 Playful Teddy Bears

While lazy, they have bursts of energy. They love chasing feather toys but will tire out quickly and return to the sofa.

They are great with children and other pets because they are so patient and non-aggressive.

Appearance: Round Everything

The Exotic Shorthair is a cobby, heavy cat.

  • Head: Massive and round with a short, snub nose (brachycephalic). The cheeks are full and the eyes are large and round, giving a sweet expression.
  • Coat: Short but incredibly dense and plush. It stands away from the body, making the cat look like a teddy bear. It comes in all Persian colors (solid, tabby, bicolor, Himalayan).
  • Body: Short legs, thick neck, and a sturdy, muscular torso.

Health & Care

Because of their face structure, Exotics have specific health needs.

Care Requirements:

  • Face Care: Their eyes tend to tear due to the short nose. Daily wiping of the eyes and face folds is necessary to prevent staining and infection.
  • Breathing: They can be sensitive to heat and exercise due to their short airways. Keep them cool in summer.
  • Kidneys: Like Persians, they are prone to Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). Responsible breeders test for this.
  • Grooming: While “shorthaired,” their coat is thick. A weekly combing helps remove loose hair.

Is the Exotic Shorthair Right for You?

If you love the sweet look and nature of the Persian but hate the idea of daily brushing, the Exotic Shorthair is the answer to your prayers. They are the perfect apartment companion.
