Breed Profile
With its oversized ears, large eyes, and mischievous expression, the Devon Rex looks like a cross between a cat, a dog, and a monkey. Known as the “Pixie of the Cat World,” this breed is pure joy wrapped in a curly coat.
⚡ Quick Look
The Devon Rex is a people addict. They want to be on your shoulder, in your lap, or helping you cook dinner. They are highly intelligent, food-motivated, and capable of learning complex tricks.
History & Origin: Kirlee’s Legacy
The Devon Rex is a relatively young breed. It started in 1960 in Devonshire, England, when Beryl Cox found a feral kitten with a curly coat living in a tin mine nearby. She named him Kirlee.
At first, breeders thought Kirlee was related to the Cornish Rex (which had appeared 10 years earlier). But when they bred them together, the kittens had straight hair! This proved that the Devon Rex mutation was a completely different gene. Since then, the breed has been developed into the unique creature we know today.
Personality: A Monkey in a Cat Suit
Life with a Devon Rex is never boring. They are intensely curious and lack boundaries.
🍕 Food Lovers
Devons are famous for begging for human food. They will try to steal pizza, pasta, or whatever you are eating. Watch your plate!
🦜 Shoulder Riders
They love vertical spaces, and their favorite perch is often their owner’s shoulder. They like to supervise everything from eye level.
They are deeply affectionate and often sleep under the covers with their owners to stay warm.
Appearance: The Elf
The Devon Rex has a unique head shape that is distinct from the Cornish Rex.
- Head: Broad and modified wedge-shaped with a short muzzle and prominent cheekbones.
- Ears: Enormous and set low on the head, often extending beyond the side of the face.
- Coat: Soft, fine, and curly or wavy. It is looser than the Cornish Rex wave. Some Devons have bald patches (which is considered a fault in shows but fine for pets).
- Whiskers: Often short, curled, or brittle.
Health & Care
Devon Rex cats are generally healthy, but their genetic pool is small.
Care Requirements:
- Grooming: Their coat is delicate. Excessive brushing can break the hair. Wiping them with a soft cloth is usually enough. Like the Cornish, they can get greasy and might need occasional baths.
- Ears: Those big ears collect dirt and wax. Weekly cleaning is essential to prevent infections.
- Health: Watch for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) and Patellar Luxation.
