Breed Profile
With its curly coat, bat-like ears, and arched back, the Cornish Rex looks like a visitor from another planet. But this “Greyhound of the Cat World” is one of the most playful, affectionate, and entertaining breeds you will ever meet.
⚡ Quick Look
The Cornish Rex is high energy. They stay kitten-like for their entire lives. They love to race, jump, and play fetch. Their incredibly soft, wavy coat sheds very little, making them a popular choice for some allergy sufferers (though no cat is truly hypoallergenic).
History & Origin: The Kallibunker Anomaly
The breed began in 1950 in a barn in Cornwall, England. A tortoiseshell cat named Serena gave birth to a litter containing one very odd kitten: cream-colored, with curly fur. His owner named him Kallibunker.
Recognizing his uniqueness, geneticists advised breeding him back to his mother (a common practice to establish a trait). The resulting kittens also had the curly coat, proving it was a recessive gene. This was the start of the Cornish Rex. The “Rex” name comes from the Rex rabbit, which has a similar coat texture.
Personality: The Eternal Kitten
If you want a dignified, quiet cat, look away. The Cornish Rex is a clown. They use their paws like hands to pick up objects, open doors, and toss toys.
🏎️ Speed Demon
They are incredibly fast. You will often see them doing “zoomies” around the house, banking off furniture like race cars.
🔥 Heat Seekers
Because their coat is so thin, they are always looking for warmth. They will burrow under covers, sit on electronics, or curl up on your lap.
They are extremely people-oriented and will follow you everywhere. They are also known for being easy to train.
Appearance: The Marcel Wave
The Cornish Rex is visually striking. Every hair on their body is curly, even their whiskers.
- Coat: It lacks guard hairs (the coarse outer layer), consisting only of the soft undercoat (down). This makes it feel like crushed velvet or silk. It forms tight, uniform waves known as “Marcel waves.”
- Body: Slender, athletic, with an arched back and a tucked-up tummy (like a greyhound).
- Head: Egg-shaped with high cheekbones and enormous ears that sit high on the head.
Health & Care
Generally robust, but their unique structure requires some care.
Care Requirements:
- Skin & Coat: They can get greasy because they don’t have enough hair to absorb natural oils. Occasional baths might be needed. They are also prone to sunburn if allowed outdoors (which they shouldn’t be).
- Diet: They have a high metabolism and a huge appetite. Watch their weight—a paunchy Cornish Rex loses its athletic grace.
Is the Cornish Rex Right for You?
If you want a high-octane, fun-loving, and incredibly soft companion who will never grow up, the Cornish Rex is the perfect match. Just make sure you have the energy to keep up!
