Breed Profile

The American Shorthair is the quintessential American cat: sturdy, adaptable, and hardworking. Often confused with random-bred domestic cats, this pedigree breed boasts a lineage that dates back to the Mayflower, where they earned their keep as expert mousers.

⚡ Quick Look

This is the “Goldilocks” of cats: not too big, not too small, not too active, not too lazy. They are affectionate without being clingy and make exceptional companions for families with children and other pets.

History: From Mouser to Show Ring

The ancestors of the American Shorthair arrived in North America with early European settlers. Their job was simple but vital: protect the ship’s food stores from rats and mice. These “working cats” thrived in the harsh New World, developing a robust constitution and a thick, protective coat.

For centuries, they were simply known as “shorthairs.” It wasn’t until the early 20th century that breeders began to select for specific traits to preserve the look and temperament of these hardworking felines. Originally renamed “Domestic Shorthair” in the 1960s, the name was later changed to American Shorthair to distinguish this pedigreed breed from random-bred alley cats.

Today, the American Shorthair is one of the most popular breeds in the United States, celebrated for its classic look and dependable personality.

Personality: The Happy Medium

If you are looking for a cat that is balanced in every way, the American Shorthair is it. They are known for their easygoing temperament. They enjoy playtime and can be quite athletic, but they also love a good nap in a sunny spot.

🤝 Independent Yet Loving

They aren’t typically “velcro cats” that need to be on you 24/7. They are happy to be near you—on the sofa or at your feet—rather than necessarily on you.

🐭 The Hunter’s Instinct

Their ancestors were working cats, and that instinct remains. Flies, spiders, and feather toys don’t stand a chance. They are playful well into adulthood.

They are generally quiet cats. When they do voice their opinion, it’s usually with a soft, sweet chirp or meow. Their adaptable nature makes them excellent for first-time cat owners.

Appearance: Built for Work

The American Shorthair is a medium-to-large cat, powerfully built with heavy boning and well-developed muscles. They have a broad chest and a round, full face with wide-set eyes that give them a sweet, open expression.

  • The Coat: Short, thick, and dense. It was designed to protect them from cold and moisture.
  • Colors: While they come in over 80 different colors and patterns, the most famous is the stunning Silver Tabby—black markings on a brilliant silver background.
  • Size: Males are significantly larger than females, often weighing 11-15 pounds or more, while females are usually 8-12 pounds.

Health & Care

Thanks to their “working class” roots, American Shorthairs are generally very healthy and long-lived, often reaching 15 to 20 years. However, responsible care is still essential.

⚠️ Watch the Waistline!

This breed loves to eat and is prone to obesity. Because they aren’t as hyperactive as some breeds, you must monitor their diet carefully. A chubby American Shorthair might look cute, but excess weight leads to diabetes and joint problems.

They can be prone to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a common heart condition in cats. reputable breeders will screen parents for this. Grooming is easy—a weekly brushing is usually enough to remove loose hair and keep their coat shiny.

Is the American Shorthair Right for You?

If you want a low-maintenance, affectionate, and sturdy companion who gets along with almost everyone, this is your breed. They bring the perfect balance of playfulness and calm to any home.
