American Curl Cat

Breed Profile

With its distinctive backward-curling ears and wide, walnut-shaped eyes, the American Curl looks like it just stepped out of a fairy tale. Often called the “Peter Pan” of the cat world, this breed retains its kitten-like playfulness well into old age.

👂 Ears of Elegance

All American Curl kittens are born with straight ears. The curl begins to happen within 3 to 5 days of birth, unfurling like a rosebud until it sets permanently around 16 weeks.

History: Shulamith’s Legacy

The American Curl is a true American success story. The entire breed traces its lineage back to a single stray cat. In 1981, Joe and Grace Ruga of Lakewood, California, found a longhaired black kitten with strange, backward-curled ears on their doorstep. They named her Shulamith.

Shulamith had a litter of kittens, and two of them inherited her curled ears, proving the trait was a dominant genetic mutation. Unlike the Scottish Fold (whose gene affects cartilage throughout the body), the American Curl gene is unique because it affects only the ear cartilage, leaving the rest of the skeleton healthy. Today, every authentic American Curl can trace its pedigree back to Shulamith.

Personality: The People-Cat

The American Curl is renowned for its people-oriented nature. They are not aloof; they are participators.

👋 The Greeter

Expect your Curl to follow you around the house, sit on your paperwork, and greet guests at the door with a friendly head-butt.

🧸 Eternal Kitten

They are famous for waking up one day at age 12 and deciding it’s still time to play tag. Their energy is moderate but persistent.

They are noticeably quiet cats. Instead of loud meows, they communicate with soft trills and cooing sounds. This gentle demeanor makes them fantastic companions for families with children or other pets.

Appearance

While the ears are the showstopper, the Curl is a well-balanced, medium-sized cat. They come in both shorthair and longhair varieties.

  • The Ears: Firm cartilage at the base, flexible at the tips. They should curl back in a smooth arc of at least 90 degrees (but not more than 180).

  • The Coat: The longhaired variety has a silky, flat-lying coat with very little undercoat, meaning it rarely mats. The tail is often described as a spectacular plume.

Health & Care

The American Curl is a very healthy breed with a large genetic pool (outcrossing to non-pedigreed cats keeps the line robust). However, their unique ears require specific care.

⚠️ Handle with Care

The cartilage in their ears is delicate. Never pull or force the ears backward or forward. Treat them gently to avoid damaging the structure. Weekly checking for wax buildup is recommended.

Is the American Curl Right for You?

If you want a cat that looks like a magical creature and acts like a loyal friend, the Curl is for you. They adapt to almost any home, provided they get love and attention.

  • Angela says:

The American Curl Cat has the cutest ears ever! Its ears are curled back and it is perfect for those who prefer unique pets over conventional-looking ones. However, you should remember that its ears are very sensitive and if not touched with care, it may be damaged. It is relatively healthy but it requires regular cleaning to protect it from different kinds of infections. It is great around people and other pets. It loves socializing and loves getting a lot of attention. It is also very affectionate and it loves to cuddle. It follows you around just like what a dog does.
