History & Origin: 4,000 Years of Legend
The history of the Cyprus cat is intertwined with mythology. Legend says that around 328 AD, Saint Helen (mother of Emperor Constantine) shipped thousands of cats from Egypt to Cyprus to combat a snake infestation in the monasteries. These cats are believed to be the ancestors of the modern Cyprus breed.
However, archaeology tells an even older story. A 9,500-year-old grave in Cyprus was found containing a human buried with a cat, predating Egyptian cat art by 4,000 years! Today, the breed has two main varieties: the “Saint Helen” (smaller) and the “Aphrodite Giant” (larger, mountain-dwelling), with the latter gaining international recognition.
Personality: The Gentle Giant
Despite their impressive size and wild history, Cyprus cats are incredibly gentle.

Because they evolved naturally in a harsh environment, Cyprus cats are remarkably healthy and hardy.
Care Requirements:
- Grooming: The semi-longhaired variety needs weekly brushing, especially in winter when the coat thickens.
- Space: Due to their size and energy, they do not do well in small, cramped apartments without vertical space.
