A relatively new breed, Ocicat cats have an interesting name and they look nice, and they were created by random mating between chocolate Siamese males and female hybrids such as Abyssinian and Siamese with black marks. The first kittens were born in 1964 in Michigan, in the United State, and they looked like Abyssinian cats, but when mated with a Siamese cat the kittens had some Siamese resemblance but with a touch of Abyssinian look as well, and one such cat was called Tonga.

In the beginning, this dotted cat was called “accicat” – to describe the occurrence of an accident (accidental coincidence) – and then it changed to “ocelette” – to emphasize its resemblance to the Ocelot (Ocelot).

Tonga was spayed and has become a beloved pet, but the owner Virginia Daly later repeated the mating and so was born a cat named Dalai Talu, a female that founded the breed. Ocicat cats were first officially recognized by TICA in 1966.

Ocicat cat is quite a large breed – they are surprisingly muscular and strongly built cats – an adult has an average of about 6 pounds (males are much larger than females). The most notable characteristic of this animal is the “jungle” sample fur with clearly visible dots.

Initially these dots were chestnut brown on a cream background, or light chocolate on a cream background, and both species have golden yellow eyes. However, in recent time developed silver Ocicat cats – a gene obtained by crossing with American Shorthair during the development of the breed.

These cats have a wedge-shaped head with a wide muzzle which gives them a pointy face, accentuated by large almond-shaped and slightly slanted eyes. Just like the Egyptian Mau cats, the eyes of Ocicat cats, which by the standards of the exhibition must be blue, are highlighted with dark edges and surrounded by lighter “glasses” , and “mascara lines”. Their tail is long and slender.

While having a certain “wild” appearance, Ocicat cast are graceful, playful and very social!
