The background of this cat breed is quite interesting as it is actually a mix between the original longhair British cats with other longhair cats such as for example from Turkey which developed in creating a sort of a Persian cat that was at the same time very massive and had very long hair, much thicker than original Persian cats. Because of this, during the early XX century, the Persian cat was an analogue of the British Shorthair cat. Later on, the shorthaired version of the Persian cat was developed more and as the result an Exotic Shorthair cat was created which was also much different than the British Shorthair. From this moment, it was suggested that the longhaired version of the British Shorthair cat is considered as a new cat breed.

The British Longhair cat is actually a long-haired version of the British Shorthair. Being very similar, the British Longhair has a square broad head. In other EU countries, this cat breed is also known as Britannica, even though not being well recognized in UK itself.

The British Longhair has a lustrous fur and physically it is stout. It also has a round head and big round eyes and short ears. Her legs are strong but short and the tail is thick and plush. This cat breed has deep chest making it overall a medium sized cat.

British Longhair cats come in a wide variety of colours and patterns – cream, red, white, black, chocolate, blue, lilac, fawn and cinnamon. As for the patterns they can be tabby, bicolour, tipped, smoke, tortoiseshell etc.

As for their temperament, the British Longhair cats are easy going and calm. They make very good house cats, especially when we take into consideration that they are less active than many other cat breeds and prefer the indoor life.

However, if kept indoors only, they are prone to obesity. The same as any other longhaired cat breed, they require regular brushing especially during the autumn and winter when their hair tangles more since the fur becomes much thicker, preparing their body for the winter period.

  • The British Longhair Cat is a domesticated cat which originated from Great Britain. This stout cat has a luxurious coat. Its round eyes are always bright. Its legs may not be as long as other cats’ but are exceptionally strong. It has a thick tail that goes well with its coat. These cats are not as active like most cat breeds but are relatively easy-going. They are actually quite calm. When neutered, you should be vigilant against obesity. This also goes for British Longhair Cats that are kept indoors. Its fur requires attention and a lot of brushing especially in winter and autumn.
