Snowshoe Cat

Snowshoe Cat

Breed Profile

The Snowshoe cat is a rare and strikingly beautiful breed, instantly recognizable by its white paws that look like it has walked through fresh snow. Combining the sleek elegance and blue eyes of the Siamese with the sturdy body and laid-back temperament of the American Shorthair, the Snowshoe offers the best of both worlds. While they may be hard to find, those who share their lives with a Snowshoe describe them as affectionate, intelligent, and uniquely entertaining companions. (Fun fact: The internet sensation “Grumpy Cat” was a Snowshoe mix!)

History and Origin

The Snowshoe is an American breed that originated in Philadelphia in the 1960s. A Siamese breeder named Dorothy Hinds-Daugherty discovered three kittens in a litter with white feet and “boots.” Fascinated by this unique look, she began a breeding program to establish these traits, crossing her Siamese cats with bicolored American Shorthairs.

Initially, the breed struggled to gain recognition because the “white feet” trait was considered a fault in Siamese circles. However, persistent breeders continued to refine the look. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the breed began to gain traction. Today, the Snowshoe is recognized by TICA (The International Cat Association) and other major cat organizations, though it remains relatively rare due to the difficulty of breeding kittens with the perfect markings.

Appearance

The Snowshoe is a medium-sized cat with a semi-foreign body type—not as tubular as the modern Siamese, but more slender than the American Shorthair.

  • Coat and Color: They are a pointed breed, meaning they have darker ears, face, tail, and legs. Common colors include seal and blue. The coat is short, smooth, and single-layered.
  • The “Snowshoe” Markings: The ideal Snowshoe has four white paws. In show cats, the front paws should have white “mittens,” and the back legs should have white “boots.” They also typically feature an inverted white “V” shape on their face, extending from the mouth to the forehead.
  • Eyes: Like their Siamese ancestors, Snowshoes always have sparkling blue eyes, ranging from pale blue to deep violet.

Personality and Temperament

Snowshoes are known for their sweet and affectionate nature. They are people-oriented cats who tend to bond deeply with one specific person in the household, though they are friendly with everyone. They are “helper” cats who will supervise your cooking, watch you shower, and “assist” with computer work.

They inherited the intelligence of the Siamese but are generally less vocal. While they will talk to you with a soft, melodic voice, they won’t yell like a Siamese. They are active and playful, often learning tricks like fetch or opening doors. Water fascination is common in the breed; don’t be surprised if your Snowshoe dips their paws in the bathtub or plays in their water bowl.

Because they are so social, they do not like being left alone for long periods. They thrive in homes with other pets or where someone is home often.

Care and Grooming

The Snowshoe is a low-maintenance breed that fits easily into most households.

Coat Care

Their short, smooth coat sheds moderately but lacks a thick undercoat, making grooming easy. A weekly brushing with a rubber mitt or soft brush is usually enough to remove loose hair and keep the coat glossy.

Social Needs

The most important aspect of Snowshoe care is companionship. They can develop separation anxiety if ignored. Engaging them with puzzle toys and interactive play is essential for their mental well-being.

Health and Wellness

Snowshoes are generally robust and healthy cats, benefiting from the genetic diversity of their American Shorthair ancestors. They typically live 14 to 19 years.

  • Cosmetic Flaws: Occasionally, kittens may be born with crossed eyes or kinked tails—traits inherited from the Siamese side. These are purely cosmetic and do not affect the cat’s health or quality of life.
  • Dental Health: Like many breeds, they can be prone to periodontal disease, so regular dental care is recommended.

Is the Snowshoe Cat Right for You?

If you love the look of the Siamese but want a cat with a mellower voice and a slightly sturdier build, the Snowshoe is an excellent choice. They are devoted, funny, and loving companions who will fill your home with personality. While finding a breeder may take some patience, the reward of owning one of these unique, white-gloved cats is well worth the wait.
