Breed Profile
When people think of the Russian cat, they almost always envision the shimmering, silver-blue coat of the famous Russian Blue. However, did you know that this elegant breed comes in other stunning colors? The Russian Black, Russian White, and Russian Tabby are identical to their blue cousins in every way—temperament, body type, and coat texture—except for the color of their fur. These variants are a testament to the versatility of the breed, offering the same intelligence and grace in a different, equally beautiful package.
History and Origins
The story of the Russian Black and White cats is a fascinating chapter in feline history that began in Australia. While the Russian Blue has been around for centuries, the white and black varieties are relatively new additions, developed in 1971 by Dick and Mavis Jones of the Myemgay Cattery. They wanted to create a Russian cat in white, so they acquired a white domestic cat from Russia (often cited as a Siberian cat) named “Manya” and bred her to one of their Russian Blue studs. Through careful selective breeding and backcrossing to pure Russian Blues to eliminate the domestic traits while keeping the white color, they succeeded in creating the Russian White.
The Russian Black and Tabby variants emerged naturally from these breeding programs as well. Today, these colors are fully recognized by major registries in Australia (ACF, CCCA) and the UK (GCCF, under the name “Russian” rather than Russian Blue). However, in North America, the CFA (Cat Fanciers’ Association) remains strict, recognizing only the Blue variety, while TICA (The International Cat Association) accepts them for registration but often under different showing criteria.
Physical Appearance
Physically, these cats are indistinguishable from the Russian Blue apart from their coat color. They possess the same “foreign” body type—graceful, long, and lithe, yet muscular. They are often described as the “Doberman Pinscher” of cats due to their elegant, athletic build. They have fine bones, long legs, and a long tapering tail.
The Coat: The hallmark of the breed is its double coat. It is short, dense, and stands away from the body, giving it a plush, velvet-like feel.
Russian White: Pure, sparkling white with no yellowing. The nose leather and paw pads are pink.
Russian Black: A solid, jet-black coat that should be sound to the root. The nose leather and paw pads are black or dark brown.
Russian Tabby: While less common, tabbies can occur in the breeding programs. They display the classic tabby markings on a background that matches the standard.
Their head is a modified wedge shape with prominent whisker pads (giving them a slight “smile”), and large ears set wide apart. The eyes are vivid green, though kittens may start with yellow eyes that turn green as they mature.
Personality and Temperament
Just like the Blue, Russian Black and White cats are known for their gentle and reserved nature. They are highly intelligent and observant. They are not the type of cat to immediately jump into a stranger’s lap; they prefer to assess new people from a distance before deciding they are trustworthy. Once you earn their love, however, their devotion is absolute.
They are often called “one-person cats” or “one-family cats,” forming a deep, almost dog-like bond with their chosen humans. They will follow you around the house, sit quietly by your side while you work, and may even learn to play fetch. They are generally quiet, with soft voices, but will communicate with you when they want attention (or dinner!).
These cats are sensitive to the mood of the household. They dislike loud noises and chaos, making them better suited to quieter homes or families with older, respectful children. They are creatures of habit and appreciate a predictable routine.
Care and Maintenance
The short, dense coat of the Russian cat is very low maintenance. It does not tangle, and a weekly brushing with a soft bristle brush or a rubber grooming mitt is all that is needed to remove loose hair and distribute skin oils. In fact, excessive brushing can sometimes damage the double coat, so gentle hand-grooming (stroking) is often just as effective.
These cats are fastidious about their hygiene and require a clean litter box at all times. If the box is dirty, they may find somewhere else to go. Regular nail trims and dental care are also standard requirements. Because they are active and intelligent, they need mental stimulation—puzzle feeders, interactive toys, and climbing trees will keep them happy and prevent boredom.
Health and Lifespan
Russian cats are a natural breed and are generally very healthy, with few breed-specific genetic problems. They are not prone to the respiratory or kidney issues that plague some other breeds. With good care, a balanced diet, and an indoor lifestyle, they can live long lives, often reaching 15 to 20 years.
One thing to watch out for is their love of food. They can be prone to obesity if allowed to overeat, so measuring their food portions and limiting treats is important to maintain their sleek, athletic figure.
Is This Breed Right for You?
If you love the personality and look of the Russian Blue but prefer a different color aesthetic, the Russian Black or White is the perfect alternative. They are best suited for owners who want a loyal, quiet, and intelligent companion. They don’t demand constant attention like a Siamese, but they don’t want to be ignored either. If you can provide a calm environment and plenty of love, these elegant cats will reward you with years of quiet companionship and affection.

Have been searching for this breed for several years, and has been unable to locate a breeder in the USA.
Is there a listing of which you know for breeders of this cat.
Thank you.

I inherited my pure white cat and I am pretty sure she is a RUSSIAN WHITE, is there any way I can confirm this?
I have a Russian blue AND black they are sisters I got from a cat shelter! I feel so lucky that I got both these angels not even knowing they were the best fit cats for me! Both like to play catch but the Russian black likes crinkle balls while the blue likes hair ties!
