Breed Profile
The Egyptian Mau is a living artifact. It is the only naturally spotted breed of domestic cat, meaning its spots are not the result of human manipulation. With a history stretching back to the Pharaohs, this cat is as regal as it is fast.
⚡ Quick Look
The Mau is the greyhound of cats. Clocked at speeds up to 30 mph, they are incredibly athletic. They are loyal, somewhat shy with strangers, and fiercely devoted to their “person.”
History & Origin: The Spotted Legacy
The word “Mau” literally means “cat” in Middle Egyptian. Ancient artwork from 3,000 years ago depicts spotted cats that look identical to the modern Mau, hunting alongside humans or sitting under chairs.
The modern breed was saved by Russian Princess Nathalie Troubetskoy. While in exile in Italy, she fell in love with the breed and brought three Maus to the United States in 1956, establishing the foundation for the breed in the West.
Personality: The One-Person Cat
Egyptian Maus are known for their intense loyalty. They often choose one family member as their “favorite” and will follow them everywhere.
🛡️ Protective
They can be wary of strangers and loud noises. They prefer a calm environment where they can survey their kingdom in peace.
🎶 Chortles
When happy, they make a unique “chortling” sound. They also wiggle their tails rapidly (like they are spraying) when excited, but don’t worry—no mess is made!
They love water and are known to play in fountains or join their owners in the bath.
Appearance: The Scarab Mark
The Egyptian Mau is a medium-sized, muscular cat with a unique build.
- Coat: Short, silky, and spotted. The spots are random and can be small or large. The skin under the spots is also spotted!
- Eyes: A stunning “gooseberry green.” They have a worried expression due to the brow line.
- Markings: They have a distinct “M” shape on their forehead, often called the “mark of the scarab” by ancient Egyptians.
- Legs: The hind legs are slightly longer than the front legs, and they have a loose flap of skin (primordial pouch) extending from flank to hind leg, which allows for their massive stride.
Health & Care
Egyptian Maus are generally healthy cats.
Care Requirements:
- Grooming: Very easy. A weekly combing is enough to keep their coat shiny.
- Sensitivity: They are known to be more sensitive to anesthesia and medicines than other breeds, so always remind your vet.
- Exercise: They need vertical space and room to run. Feather wands are a favorite toy.
