The Brazilian Shorthair is the first Brazilian cats breed with international recognition even though through the development of this cat breed there were many changes. In the beginning this was a feral cat to become later a purebred cat breed.

The founding lineage of Brazilian Shorthair cats are Portuguese feline cats brought by the first sailors back in the 1500 a.d. to protect their food from rodents. It is interesting that this cat breed was developed without any special cares or rules. The characteristics that define this cat breed are the features and appearances of Brazilian street cats. The largest Cat federation called World Cat Federation (WCF) approved the Brazilian Shorthair Cat as purebred cat in 1998. Today, this cat breed can easily participate in contests all over the world.

The Brazilian Shorthair Cats are of medium size. They have a muscular body but at the same time very elegant. Even though being similar to American Shorthair cat breed, they can still be distinguished by their sleek and elegant appearance. Their fur is short and close to the skin and is also available in many different patterns and colours (all colours are possible). Since they don’t have undercoat what is interesting is that even people who are allergic to cats suffer the least with this cat breed. What gives them a unique look are their dramatically expressive eyes. The colour of their eyes resembles the fur colour. These cats are much longer than they are taller and it is interesting that females have smaller heads than males.

The tail of Brazilian Shorthair cats shouldn’t be broad at base and should taper in tip. These cats also have a curved profile and pointed large ears. When it comes to hygiene, minimum brushing is acquired since their fur is very short.

The Brazilian Shorthair cat can be both indoor and outdoor animal. These cats are very keen on human contact and are very playful.

  • The Brazilian Shorthair Cat is one of the most agile cat breeds. It has an air of royalty with its elegant and sleek look. I love its expressive eyes. Its eyes usually have the color of its coat. It does not have undercoat so there is no need to worry about shedding. Its coat is glossy and silky even though it is very short. This is perfect if you are allergic to cats but just cannot keep yourself from getting one. As a kitten, it can get very active and playful but changes and sobers with age. They remain playful though not as how they were when they were kittens.
