Breed Profile
The Ukrainian Levkoy is a breed that commands attention. With its hairless body, folded ears, and large, expressive eyes, it looks like a creature from another world or a work of modern art. But beneath this striking, alien-like exterior lies a heart of pure gold. The Levkoy is a friendly, intelligent, and deeply affectionate cat that thrives on human companionship. A relatively new breed developed in Ukraine, it combines the unique traits of the Donskoy and the Scottish Fold to create a cat that is as fascinating to live with as it is to look at.
History: A Modern Masterpiece
The Ukrainian Levkoy is a very young breed, created in the early 21st century. The vision behind the breed came from Elena Biriukova, a felinologist and breeder in Kiev, Ukraine. She wanted to create a cat that resembled a delicate plant—specifically the Levkoy plant (Matthiola), which has bent leaves that reminded her of the cat’s folded ears.
Development began in 2000 by crossing the hairless Donskoy (Don Sphynx) with the Scottish Fold. The goal was to combine the Donskoy’s hairlessness and elegant body type with the Scottish Fold’s unique folded ears. The first registered Levkoy, named “Levkoy Primero,” was born in January 2004.
Currently, the breed is recognized by clubs in Ukraine and Russia (such as the Rolandus Union International and WCA) but is still considered experimental or preliminary by major international organizations like TICA and CFA. Despite this, its popularity is growing rapidly among enthusiasts of hairless breeds due to its unique look and wonderful temperament.
Appearance: Unique and Sculptural
The Ukrainian Levkoy is a medium-sized cat with a long, muscular, and elegant body. It has a distinctive “stepped” profile and a very specific look.
- Head: The head is a modified wedge, long and flat. The profile has a “dog-like” appearance with a distinct step between the forehead and the nose. The cheekbones are high and prominent.
- Ears: The defining feature! They are large and set wide apart. The tips are rounded and folded forward and down, but not as tightly to the head as a Scottish Fold. They stand up a bit more, giving the cat an alert, inquisitive expression. Note: Some Levkoys have straight ears (Levkoy Straight), which are essential for breeding to maintain genetic health.
- Eyes: Large, almond-shaped, and set at a slant. They can be any color, often vibrant green or gold.
- Body: The body is long, slender, and muscular, with a broad chest. The legs are long and strong, ending in oval paws with long toes. The tail is long and whip-like.
- Skin and Coat: Most Levkoys are hairless, with skin that feels like hot chamois or velvet. It is soft, warm, and elastic, often wrinkling on the head, neck, and belly. However, they can also have a fine down or be “brush” coated (short, wire-haired), similar to the Donskoy.
Personality: The Gentle Companion
Levkoys are famous for their gentle and friendly nature. They are not aggressive or overly demanding, but they are very sociable.
Affectionate and Clingy: They bond deeply with their owners and will follow you everywhere. They love physical contact—sitting on your lap, sleeping under the covers, or riding on your shoulder. Their warm, hairless skin makes them excellent “heaters” in the winter!
Intelligent and Curious: These are smart cats. They are inquisitive and will explore every corner of your home. They enjoy puzzle toys and interactive games. Many can be taught to fetch or respond to voice commands.
Peaceful and Tolerant: Levkoys generally get along well with children and other pets, including dogs. They are patient and rarely scratch or bite unless provoked. Their easygoing nature makes them adaptable to different living situations.
Quiet Voices: Unlike some oriental breeds, Levkoys are not typically loud. They have soft, pleasant voices and use them only when they need something.
Care and Maintenance
Owning a hairless cat requires a different care routine than a furred cat.
Skin Care
Because they lack hair to absorb oils, Levkoys need regular bathing (usually once a week or every two weeks) to prevent their skin from becoming greasy or developing acne. Use a gentle, pet-safe shampoo. Their large ears also need regular cleaning to prevent wax buildup.
Temperature Control
Without a fur coat, Levkoys are sensitive to temperature extremes. They need to be kept indoors. In winter, they will appreciate a heated bed or a sweater. In summer, they can get sunburned if they sit in direct sunlight for too long, so provide shady spots or use pet-safe sunscreen on their ears and nose.
Diet and Metabolism
Hairless cats have a higher metabolism to maintain their body temperature. They often need more food than coated cats of the same size. A high-quality, high-protein diet is essential. Ensure fresh water is always available.
Health and Genetics
The Ukrainian Levkoy is generally healthy, but potential owners should be aware of issues related to its parent breeds.
- Osteochondrodysplasia: This is the genetic mutation that causes the folded ears in Scottish Folds and can affect cartilage and bone development. While outcrossing with Donskoys helps mitigate this, responsible breeding (never breeding two folded-ear cats together) is crucial to prevent skeletal issues.
- Skin Issues: Like all hairless cats, they can be prone to skin irritations, fungal infections, or sunburn if not cared for properly.
- Gum Disease: Regular dental care is important to prevent gingivitis.
Is a Ukrainian Levkoy Right for You?
The Ukrainian Levkoy is a special cat for a special owner. Their unique look is not for everyone, but those who appreciate them find them exquisitely beautiful. If you are prepared for the extra care their skin requires and want a devoted, warm, and loving companion who will be a constant presence in your life, the Levkoy is a perfect choice.
They are conversation starters, bed warmers, and loyal friends who prove that beauty is far more than just fur-deep.
