A computer programmer named Cora Cobb gifted a black domestic shorthair to her son. This cat mated with a Russian Blue-like male, producing a litter that included one unique male kitten with long, blue hair. Cobb named him Siegfried, after the hero of the Germanic Nibelungenlied saga.

A subsequent litter produced a female with similar traits, whom she named Brunhilde. Realizing she had something special, Cobb bred Siegfried and Brunhilde together, and their first litter in 1986 became the foundation of the Nebelung breed. With the help of geneticists from TICA (The International Cat Association), the breed standard was written to closely match the Russian Blue but with a long coat. The breed was granted championship status by TICA in 1997, though it remains rare and treasured by those lucky enough to find one.

Physical Characteristics

The Nebelung is a medium-sized, foreign-type cat with a long, graceful body and fine boning. They are muscular but lean, moving with the elegance of a dancer. Their most striking feature is their coat: medium-long, soft, and silky, with a dense undercoat.
