Breed Profile
The Mekong Bobtail is a rare and ancient natural breed that hails from Southeast Asia. Often described as a cat with the soul of a dog, this breed combines the stunning good looks of a Siamese with the unique charm of a bobbed tail. While relatively unknown in the West until recently, the Mekong Bobtail has a rich history in its native lands and is rapidly gaining admirers for its affectionate, loyal, and intelligent nature.
History and Royal Legends
Named after the mighty Mekong River that flows through China, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, the Mekong Bobtail shares its ancestry with the Siamese. In fact, many early Siamese cats exported to the West had kinked tails, a trait that was later bred out of the modern show Siamese but preserved in the Mekong Bobtail. Legends tell of these cats guarding ancient temples and royal palaces. It was said that when Thai princesses went to bathe, they would slide their rings onto the kinked tails of their cats for safekeeping—ensuring the jewelry wouldn’t slip off.
Though originating in Asia, the breed was actually refined and developed in Russia, where it was brought by travelers. It was officially recognized by the World Cat Federation (WCF) in 2004, solidifying its status as a distinct and cherished breed.
The Unique Tail
The defining feature of the Mekong Bobtail is, of course, its tail. No two tails are alike; each one is a unique “fingerprint” of kinks, curves, and angles. The tail is short, usually consisting of at least three vertebrae, but shorter than a quarter of the body length. Despite its broken appearance, the tail is flexible and expressive. Importantly, the kinks and curves should not interfere with the cat’s health or movement.
Physical Appearance
Mekong Bobtails are medium-sized, muscular cats with a rectangular body shape. They are athletic and agile, with legs of medium length. Their coat is short, glossy, and close-lying, with minimal undercoat, making them very soft to the touch. They display the classic colorpoint pattern seen in Siamese cats, with a light body and darker “points” on the ears, face, paws, and tail. Their eyes are a striking, intense blue, large and oval-shaped, giving them an alert and intelligent expression.
Personality and Temperament
If you want a dog but live in an apartment where only cats are allowed, the Mekong Bobtail is the perfect compromise. These cats are incredibly loyal and attach deeply to their human owners rather than to a house. They are known to follow their people everywhere, often supervising household chores or sitting nearby. They are one of the few cat breeds that are comfortable walking on a leash and can even be taught to play fetch.
They are highly intelligent and curious, always investigating new objects and visitors. Unlike some vocal Oriental breeds, the Mekong Bobtail tends to be quieter, though they will still communicate with soft chirps and purrs. They are excellent with children and get along well with other pets, including dogs, thanks to their confident and sociable nature.
An interesting quirk of the breed is their skin, which fits loosely over their body. This trait is thought to be an ancient defense mechanism, allowing the cat to twist and turn even if grabbed by a predator (or a playful puppy), minimizing injury.
Health and Care
The Mekong Bobtail is a natural breed and is generally very healthy and long-lived, with many individuals reaching their late teens. Because their body structure is natural and balanced, they do not suffer from the spinal issues sometimes associated with other bobtail breeds like the Manx. However, standard veterinary check-ups are always essential.
Grooming is a breeze with this breed. Their short coat with little undercoat means they shed very little and rarely get matted. A simple weekly brushing to remove loose hair and keep their coat shiny is all that is typically required. Their nails should be trimmed regularly, and their teeth brushed to prevent dental disease.
Conclusion
The Mekong Bobtail is a hidden gem in the cat world. With its stunning blue eyes, unique tail, and dog-like devotion, it offers the best of both worlds for pet lovers. Whether you are looking for a playful companion for your kids or a loyal friend to follow you around the house, the Mekong Bobtail is a breed that is sure to steal your heart.

Your opening information box states the origin for the Mekong Bobtail cat is Russia. Then just below info box , the opening paragraph about the Mekong Bobtail cat, states the origin for the cat is Thailand. Can you please correct one or the other – it is very confusing. Thank you.
Hello,
The origin of the breed is Thailand. They were called thai bobtail, however in Russia was decided to rename this breed Mekong bobtail (Mekong is a river in the thailand). So the breed is aboriginal, not outcrossed like let say toybobs.
