Sokoke cats are a recently developed cat breed of domestic cats that is already recognized by major cat pedigree registry organizations. This cat breed got its name after the Kenyan landrace where it was developed, named Arabuko Sokoke.

This first species of these cats were brought to Europe (Denmark) by Gloria Moeldrop. Later on, she started importing more of these cats in order to strengthen the stock breed, and they were first shown in 1984 in Copenhagen. In 1993 the breed was recognized by the FIF under the name Sokoke, and only in 2011 by TICA.

The body of Sokoke cats is thin and long. They have long legs, and their back legs are a bit longer than the front legs. This is a characteristic of wild cats. The Sokoke cats have also a unique tip-toe gait. They have light green eyes.

As for their fur, these cats have tabby coats in shades of brown. The fur is short and coarse, without undercoat. Recessive colors and traits are rare and colors not accepted for showing are black and blue as well as seal lynx points.

Males help in raising the kittens. It is expected that these cats deliver at least two litters per year. In some rarer situations, two litters might come closely in a row. Adulthood is reached at around 8 to 10 months of age.

This cat breed is very active and enjoys climbing. They can be very vocal in some situations; especially in cases they are protecting their territory. These cats bond with their owners as well as with other cats of the same breed.

They are mostly indoor cats and the same as many other short haired cats they too do not thrive in extreme cold temperatures. However, this doesn’t mean that they can’t be acclimated to colder temperatures though. The expected lifespan for this cat breed is around 15 years.
