The Russian Black, White and Tabby are cat breeds created in 1971. These breeds were derived from the Russian Blue cat so they all have the same physical characteristics apart from the coat color. But the Russian White was derived from the Russian Black and Tabby.

The Russian White program started in Australia in 1971. First they mated the white Siberian cat with Russian Blue. The result were two white kittens which were later on applied for permission to breed White Russians. The only cat breeds suitable to breed with the Russian Blue are white cats from Russia or Siberia.

The first Russian White was a beautiful cat with all charming characteristics and appearances of the Russian Blue. The first generations of Russian White were registered in 1971.

There are some tricks in how to recognize the breed. For example, the GCCF and the ACF don’t recognize the Russian Black, White and Tabby cats as a separate breed. Instead, they recognize them as Russian Blue in different colors. CFA recognizes only Russian Blue’s while the ACFA recognizes them as Russian Shorthair in blue, black and white color.

Russians are very affectionate cats, and don’t tend to be destructive. They are also very intelligent, sensitive and quiet. They can even easily learn how to use the toilet, how to open doors, etc. They like to fetch toys, so they are somewhat very similar to dogs. But, just by being devoted and loyal as they know to be, they make great companions for the entire family.

The fur of the Russian Black, White and Tabby cats is silky and plush, and its clear tippings give it a very lustrous shine. They also have an undercoat which is very fine. However, a bit of grooming is necessary though.

These Russian cats are very healthy and very hearty. With proper care, they can most certainly live quite well into their teens and even beyond that.

  • Have been searching for this breed for several years, and has been unable to locate a breeder in the USA.

Is there a listing of which you know for breeders of this cat.

    Thank you.

  • I inherited my pure white cat and I am pretty sure she is a RUSSIAN WHITE, is there any way I can confirm this?

  • I have a Russian blue AND black they are sisters I got from a cat shelter! I feel so lucky that I got both these angels not even knowing they were the best fit cats for me! Both like to play catch but the Russian black likes crinkle balls while the blue likes hair ties!
