According to some researches, it was discovered that the oldest example of domesticated cat can be found in Cyprus, where in 2004 an archaeologist discovered human remains together with remains of cat. This specific cat skeleton predates 4000 years or even more, and is from the Egyptian period.
This is actually a landrace of domestic cats, probably a descendant of Egyptian cats brought to Cyprus. The Cyprus cats are not recognized as a formal breed. They developed in the mountainous regions of Cyprus. These cats are very large, and because of that, their massive size enabled them to hunt large prey. They have very long back legs, which helps them in climbing steep slopes. Due to the fact that the life in mountains was very harsh, they developed their luxuriant coats that helped them during the cold winters. These cats can still be found in some mountain regions of the coast of Cyprus.
Cyprus cats are also believed to be among the largest cat breeds in the world. They are very close relative to the Cyprus Longhair cat breed; they are very energetic and athletic. These cats also adapted to different climates as nowadays we can see them from mountainous regions to coastal areas.
They have strong and big body, long neck and back. Due to their physical appearance, kittens are big boned right from the beginning. Their head is in a triangular shape, with long straight muzzle and nose, strong chin and teeth. Their eyes are olive shaped and all colours are allowed. Their ears are medium to large, wide at the base and slightly rounded at the top head. The tail of Cyprus cats is medium to long, and they also have a soft cotton semi long hair.
Cyprus cats have very calm temperament; therefore they make ideal house pets. They are very loving and very sociable and. They like to be spoiled and can stay four hours in someone’s lap just to be groomed.
