Chartreux cats are a very rare breed that originates from France. It is interesting that this breed is not recognised by the GCCF (UK) due to the fact that it is too similar to the British Shorthair cats breed.

Chartreux cats are large and muscular, and with very fast reflexes. These cats are also very well known by their shorthaired double coats and orange/copper eyes. Due to the structure of their head and their tapered muzzles, these cats look as if they were smiling, which gives them an adorable look. Chartreux cats are very prized by farmers because of the fact that they are excellent hunters. Their fur is medium in length and woolly, therefore their undercoat gives the feeling of sheep’s wool.

This is a relatively old cat breed, and the first registries of this breed were found in the 18th century. In the 1st World war this breed was greatly diminished, but thanks to efforts of many breeders, this cat was kept from extinction. Some of the most famous owners of the Chartreux cats were Charles de Gaulle (French president) and novelist Charles Baudelaire. However, some recent researches found that the origin of this cat breed was in ancient Persia, and it is believed that they arrived to France (French monasteries) with knights that came back from the Crusades.

Chartreux cats are very quiet and they almost never make ay noise. They are very intelligent cats and very observant. It takes up to 2 years for them to reach adulthood. They are very playful cats even when they reach their adulthood, and some of them can be trained as dogs – to fetch small objects.

Chartreux cats are non aggressive cats; they are generally healthy and affectionate. It is very interesting that these cats love to bond with one person from the household, but at the same time remain loving and affectionate to other members of the same household.

  • I am looking to find a Chartreux Cat for my very own. I have had alot of wonderful cats throughout my life time but have always desired this particular breed. I am sick with Multiple Sclerosis and I’m home on disability. So I would have plenty of time to spend with her/him, and I enjoy cuddling and talking to them. My last three cats passed on at home. These were elderly shelter kitties that I loved to death but, when its time to go they pretty much let us know..
